Bahrain is a small island state near the western shore of the Persian Gulf. Formerly an Emirate, Bahrain was declared a kingdom in 2002. It is an archipelago of 33 islands, the largest of which, Bahrain Island, is connected to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway. The population is approximately 1.2 million, and the official language is Arabic.
